Tell me about yourself. Where did you grow up, and how did you end up pursuing a career in trucking Sure! I’m originally from Saginaw, Michigan, but I grew up in a small area called Spalding in Saginaw County. Growing up, I didn’t have a clear idea of what I wanted to do after high school. Like a lot of kids, I made some mistakes and ended up getting into a little trouble. But those experiences shaped me. Around that time, I joined the fire department, and that really helped me turn things around. It taught me discipline, responsibility, and the importance of helping others. My interest in trucking started with my older brother. He’s a truck driver, and I always admired the work he did. He even helped me land a job at Star of the West Milling, where I got my first taste of what it’s like to operate large vehicles. I found that I enjoyed the challenge of handling such big equipment and decided to explore it further. From age 18 to 23, I worked different jobs and even pursued firefighting as a career. But trucking kept calling me back. That’s when I decided to enroll at Tri-Area Trucking School to get the proper training I needed.
What was your experience like at Tri-Area Trucking School? It was incredible. I’ve been through other training programs, like the Fire Academy, which took four months to complete, but the one-month program at Tri-Area taught me more than I ever expected. The instructors there genuinely care about their students and want them to succeed. They focus on quality over quantity, which makes all the difference. The training was very hands-on. My instructors, Stan and Jason, were phenomenal. They didn’t just teach us how to pass the tests - they made sure we truly understood the material and could apply it in real-world scenarios. For example, they emphasized achieving 90% or higher on practice tests, even though the state only requires 80%. This higher standard gave me so much confidence when it was time to take my road test.
Can you share any specific challenges you faced during your training? How did you overcome them? The training itself was straightforward because the instructors broke it down so well, but there were definitely some challenges along the way. One of the biggest hurdles was staying patient and not getting discouraged. For example, one of my classmates struggled with the 90-degree backing maneuver. It took her several tries to get it right, and she didn’t pass her road test on her first attempt. But she kept at it and eventually succeeded. Watching her determination was really inspiring. Another challenge was dealing with group dynamics. Sometimes, not everyone in your training group will have the same attitude or work ethic. There might be people who think they know it all or aren’t as serious about the program. That can create tension, but it’s important to stay focused on your own goals and support each other as much as possible.
What advice would you give to someone who’s considering enrolling in a trucking school? First and foremost, do it. If you’re even slightly interested in trucking, take the leap. But make sure it’s something you truly want to do. If you’re not fully committed, you’re just wasting your time and the instructors’ time. Second, don’t get discouraged. Everyone learns at their own pace, and the instructors at Tri-Area won’t let you take your road test until they’re confident you’re ready. Trust the process and remember that failing is part of learning. It’s not about how many times you fall, it’s about that one time you succeed. Lastly, if finances are a concern, look into programs like Michigan Works. They can help cover the cost of your training, making it more accessible.
How has this training impacted your personal and professional life? The impact has been life-changing. Before this, I was working jobs that didn’t offer much stability or room for growth. Now, I have a career with real potential. Right now, I’m driving a 45-foot side loader, delivering products to gas stations and stores. It’s getting me the experience I need to move into better positions with higher pay. One of the best things about having a CDL is job security. There’s always a demand for truck drivers because everything we use, from food to furniture, is delivered by trucks. Knowing I have a stable career path is incredibly reassuring. I’ve had friends who went through other schools, and their experiences didn’t compare to mine. At Tri-Area, the instructors genuinely care about their students’ success. Jason, for example, doesn’t have to be there, but he chooses to because he’s passionate about helping people. That kind of dedication is rare. Another thing that sets Tri-Area apart is their emphasis on preparation. Unlike other schools that rush students through the program, Tri-Area ensures you’re fully prepared before taking your test. This approach builds confidence and sets you up for long-term success.
What’s your outlook on your future in trucking? Do you have any long-term goals? I’m optimistic about the future. While my current job isn’t exactly what I want to do long-term, it’s a stepping stone. My goal is to gain enough experience to transition into long-haul trucking or other higher-paying opportunities. I’m also open to exploring specialized areas of trucking, like hauling hazardous materials or oversized loads. The training I received at Tri-Area has set me up for success, and I’m excited to see where this career takes me. One thing I know for sure is that trucking offers endless possibilities. Whether you want to stay local or travel across the country, there’s something for everyone in this industry.
